Bioventures gives students practical experience commercializing their ideas or existing IP. Local life science mentors coach each team to develop a business plan for our investor pitch day.
Teams of scientists, MBAs, MDs, and more begin with nascent intellectual property, conduct market diligence, identify a commercially viable product, and create a commercialization plan, culminating in a refined investor pitch. Each team will be mentored by experienced medical entrepreneurs. Bioventures gives students practical experience commercializing medical research by reducing complex medical concepts to clear value propositions.
Bioventures is for anyone who has had some exposure to entrepreneurship and is looking to explore whether starting a company is the right next step or something to pursue in the future.
The first four iterations of the course helped launched companies that are still active today. After completing Bioventures in Spring 2014, Luminostics participated in the prestigious Y combinator accelerator program in Summer 2016. In the Bioventures 2015 cohort, the winners, Nangiotex, incorporated their company and have participated in accelerator programs in Boston and New York. In the 2017 cohort, Pheramor formed in December 2016 at a Bioventures pre-session and closed a seed round in April 2017 after completing Bioventures. Resthetics, another 2017 team, has continued to be successful and pitch competitions and was accepted into TMCx Medical Device Cohort following maturation in BioVentures. 2018 alums ClickSeq and Harbinger Biosciences have been working on their companies (including in National NSF iCorps programming) while the founders finish their PhDs. Other participants of Bioventures are actively involved in the Houston community at companies and institutes including DNAtrix, Advanced Electrophoresis Systems, Cancer Moonshots, Fannin Innovation Studio, Enventure, and others. Collectively, Bioventures teams have raised over $4 million.
